Getting Simonini Victor 1 Ready To Go - Engine Coolant Temperature Control

To reglate engine water temperature, and old stype roll up type window shade mechanism is being used. The roller assembly material was taken from a child's car window shade mechanism and it was cut down to fit the width of the radiator. To hold the roller in place a bracket was attached to each side of the radiator just below the upper tank. Vertical rub plates or wires are provided to keep the shutter(shade) material from blowing back onto the radiator core.

To pull the shutter down, a fixture is attached to the middle of the bottom radiator tank that will hold a small diameter aluminum tube. The tube is held in place with small wire ties. Woven fish line will be fed to the tube to pull down the shutter. The shade spring will pull shutter into the open or up position, and a fish reel mechanism in the cockpit will pull the shutter down. The fish line will be run a round a pulley on the lower longeron in the front of the cockpit. This will let a bead be tied into the fish line as a position indicator.

One can close the shutter for quick engine warm up, and to maintain suitable engine coolant temperatures during taxi. The shutter will be opened for takeoff and climb out, and then adjusted for 180 degrees F during cruise. During let down, the shutter can be adjusted closed to maintain engine temperature.
